Five DeezやLone Catalystsの登場で、今やヒップホップの聖地とも言われるオハイオ州シンシナティー出身のMC、『Verses』。Versesは、80年代にリアルタイムでKurtis BlowやThe Sugar Hill Gangを経験し、ラップを始めた。90年代になると、Outkast、EPMD、Boogie Down Productions、Public Enemy、Biz Markie、Special Ed、Poor Righteous Teachers、Mos Def、Talib Kweli、Common、The Roots……といった、あらゆるサウンドに耳を傾け、自身のラッパーとしてのオリジナリティーを模索。そして1996年、アイオワ州の大学在学時代に、 MCのVersesとSignet-ring、そしてDJ Selahの2MC＋1DJというトリオ編成で、Rhymes Electというグループ名で活動を開始する。2001年には、そのRhymes Electとしてのファースト・アルバム「Lyrical Resurrection」を自身のレーベル、[ Rhymes Elect Music ]より発表。2006年には、5年振りとなるセカンド・アルバム「Irregular Remedy」（Rhymes Elect Music）を完成させたばかりだ。また、Rhymes Electの活動と並行して、注目のプロデューサー＝Tony Stoneと制作、完成させた本作「Listening Session」で、Versesは否が応にも世界的な注目を浴びるであろう。既に本国アメリカでは、CommonやTalib Kweli、Kanye West、Mos Def、CL Smooth辺りと比較されているというVersesが、今後要注目のリリシストの一人なのは疑いの余地がない。「We Do It」「Ms. O'Ginny」「Love Jawns」のような、美麗なトラックと流れるような歌フロウが絡む秀逸の楽曲を聴けば、彼にはその資格が十二分にあると確信できるはずだ。 |
